Veterans Memorial

Veterans Memorial Park Overview
Halsey is proud to be the home of a beautiful Veterans Memorial Park that honors those from the Central Linn Community (Halsey, Shedd, Brownsville, and surrounding rural area) that served in the armed forces. The center of the park features a tall, granite monument that lists the names of over four hundred veterans who served post WW1. Featured on the Library wall on the north end of the park is a bronze plaque displaying the names of those who served in WW1. Located at the corner of H Street and West 1st Street, the park features benches for rest and refection, ADA accessibility, and is open to visitors each day from dawn until dusk.

Project History
The City of Halsey is honored to have been a recipient of a $28,515 grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department Veterans & War Memorials Grant program, as well as a $500 grant from the Central Linn Community Foundation to rejuvenate the Veterans Memorial Park. A Veterans Memorial Committee was formed to guide the decision making process for the project.

The project involved removing a maple tree from the park, installing a new circular seating area with benches, installation of a new flag pole and lighting, and a new monument in the center of the park. The unhealthy trees in the planting strip on the south end of the park were replaced, and new planters were added.

The City of Halsey is grateful for the partnership of the American Legion Post 184 for this project. We also thank the Brownsville Community Foundation, the Central Linn Lions Club, DLF Pickseed, Georgia Pacific, Alyrica, Grace Bible Community Church, the Halsey Shedd Rural Fire Protection District, and the Spirit of the Valley United Methodist Church for their support for the project. Also contributing to the project were volunteer hours, community donations, in-kind donations, and city contribution of labor, equipment and funds.

Dedication Ceremony
The memorial was dedicated on November 4, 2017 with over 100 guests in attendance. Below is a video if the event done by the Albany Democrat Herald.

Names on The Memorial

The Veterans Memorial Committee spent several years gathering and researching names for the Memorial; including speaking with community members, going through old newspapers, and visiting local cemeteries. Requests for names were sent out to the community via the City Newsletter and local newspaper. Each name submission was reviewed by the Veterans Memorial Committee before being included on the monument. For a full list of names, click HERE.
